So you need a photographer?

So you need a photographer? Are you planning a wedding, special event, etc & looking for a photographer for your needs? If you answered yes to either or both of those questions this article is just for you!

Getting started hiring a photographer can be a daunting task. How & where do you start and what do you look for are some of the most common questions we as photographers get asked about hiring out photography services. I've put together a list of some of the most important details to consider when looking to hire a photographer, whether you're looking for family portraits, an engagement or wedding, a special occasion or an event.

The number 1 most important detail is what do YOU want or need? Not every photographer covers all the bases when it comes to photography. Are you looking for a certain style or look, certain types of deliverables, or specific services then you want to choose a photographer that specializes in what you're wanting or needing.

It’s important to know what style and type of images you’re looking for, so you can choose a photographer who can meet your specific needs.

Next up....

Now that you've decided on what you need. Now it's time to start looking at individual photographer portfolios to see what photographers have the style & services that you are looking for.

Ask yourself does this photographers images match my vision, do you like they way they look. Do the colors look natural (whites white & blacks black), Does the photographers style match what I'm looking for. Do the images tell a story? If the photographers style is entirely different from your own, you’re not going to be pleased with the results.

Finally after you've found a photographer offing what you're needing & whose style matches the results you are expecting it's time to get them on the phone or meet in person. You'll want a photographer whose personality meshes well with yours & you are comfortable working with so you can have effective communication and get on the same page creatively.

Once you've found a photographer whose style matches your own & what you are looking for that meshes well with your personality, then its time to dig into the nitty gritty.

  1. Does the photographer offer the services you are truly needing - Be sure to focus on the photographer’s specialty.

  2. Does the photographer offer the items you are wanting (prints, albums, framed images, etc)

  3. What is their experience & do they have the necessary equipment to deliver what you are looking for.

  4. Does the price tag make sense for your budget

  5. Read the fine print - Only work with photographers who are upfront and have professional contracts, a professional photographer will not have a problem letting you read over their contract before talking about service specifics.

Bonus Tip:

Set both yourself & your chosen photographer up for success...

Communication is Key! Prior to the day of the event provide your photographer with a written timeline & schedule of events, mention any special requests you might have- whether its specific photos, surprise events, specific shot lists, specific locations, etc. This includes details of the event venue like contact information, room numbers, access codes, etc. Hiring a professional photographer will go a long way to ensure that they are able to capture everything necessary with minimal or no guidance - however regardless of their level of experience photographers are not mind readers, so a little pre planning can be the difference between an ultimate success or possible failure.
